Dangerous Speech

Dangerous Speech

How to Detect It, How to Counter It

On March 22nd at 7:00pm the Forum will feature Susan Benesch, Faculty Associate of the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard who now teaches human rights at American University's School of International Service and directs the Dangerous Speech Project.

Inflammatory public speech rises steadily before outbreaks of mass violence, suggesting that it is a precursor or even a prerequisite for violence, which makes sense: groups of killers do not form spontaneously. In many cases, a few influential speakers gradually incite a group to violence. Violence may be prevented, then, by interfering with this process in any of several ways: inhibiting the speech, limiting its dissemination, undermining the credibility of the speaker, or 'inoculating' the audience against the speech so that it is less influential or dangerous.  CLICK HERE to Read More...

Gardening in a Post-Wild World

Thomas Rainer is a horticultural futurist fascinated by the intersection of wild plants and human culture. A landscape architect by profession and a gardener by obsession, Thomas has worked on projects such as the U.S. Capitol grounds, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, and The New York Botanical Garden, but is happiest puttering in his small garden in Washington, D.C.

Thomas thinks you should use more natives, plant more daringly, and loosen up that landscape, for crying out loud.  CLICK HERE to Read More...

IMMIGRATION!

Laws, Policies, Politics, and Myths

On February 22nd at 7:00pm the Forum will focus on IMMIGRATION!  Law, Policy and Myths, with a presentation by our own Martha J. Schoonover, Shareholder of Greenberg Traurig, who has been named “Lawyer of the Year,” Immigration Law, Washington, D.C., for 2017.

Duane Musser will join in to give us insight into how immigration legislation affects us on the ground.  Duane is the Vice President of Government Relations at a national trade association, where he oversees and directs the association's work on government policy and political matters.  CLICK HERE to Read More...
