Church Engineers Club

You are invited to join the new Church Engineers Club dedicated to providing professional assistance to any church on the maintenance, repair, and/or replacement of mechanical, electrical, computer, or HVAC systems.

Our community is filled with wonderful churches, many of them historic.  Their congregations are giving people involved in many activities of benevolence and faith.  Yet when you look at these churches through the eyes of an engineer you see the glazing in the windows falling out, the steeple in need of patching and paint, the cracks in the parking lot, failing retaining walls and you can only wonder about the condition of the internal mechanical, electrical, computer, and HVAC systems.

Everywhere you look you see pipes, wires, beams, ducting, winches, along with a low-pressure boiler systems and air handlers built when the Ford Edsel was introduced.  It is truly a tinkering engineer’s vision of heaven.  The lists of work to be done boggles the mind and are so excruciatingly complex and technical it is no wonder remedial action goes undone.

For many churches the light at the end of the tunnel is really a train coming the other way. The church knows something must be done but usually does not have the internal resources to deal with the physical problems.  They need an unbiased place to turn to for advice.

And so we are creating the Church Engineers Club made up of members that like to tinker with systems of all types and ages.  A group heavy in engineering, the trades, and property management skills that can unite to form a knowledgebase of guides, consultants, contractors, and specialists to assist any church in maintenance, repair and/or replacement of their systems. Our role is not to do the work but to be a reliable and independent source on how to proceed, to fact check, and assist in monitoring the project.  Membership in this club is free and open to the community as we seek volunteers to provide expert guidance while also enjoying each other’s company.

The first meeting of the Church Engineers Club will be held on July 20th at 7:30pm in the Fellowship Hall of Walker Chapel United Methodist Church, 4102 N Glebe Road, Arlington, VA 22207.  The club is open to all people, all backgrounds, and all faiths.   An optional half-hour tour of the mechanical and HVAC spaces will start at 7:00pm.  Please register below so we may properly prepare for the meeting.  If you cannot make it to the meeting but would like to be placed on the listserv, please register as such.
